Action Plan:
Who: Student and parents at the kermess
Where: At FDR kermess
When Saturday 12 May, 2012
What: We are going to the kermesse so that people can adopt some dogs that were rescued from the streets of Lima.
How: After thinking of the idea of using the kermesse as an opportunity to do our Action Plan, we followed these steps:
We asked the PTA for permission to apply our Action Plan at the FDR kermesse and filled out the form they handed to us.
2. We send an email to inform Veronica Zapata, who is giving us the dogs and also helps Grupo Caridad, that our action plan in the kermesse had been approved.
3. Veronica Zapata answered our email and confirmed her assistance. She said we should provide food and water for the dogs, using two big bowls large enough for five dogs. She also said we should bring some toys for the dogs and fence some space so the dogs cannot escape.
4. We wrote an email to Mr. Mark asking him to contact all the parents through email assisting to the FDR kermesse so that they would know about our Action Plan.
5. We created flyers to give out at the kermesse so that people could have some extra information, and confidence in the adoption process.
6. During the kermesse we will attract people to our booth and explain our Action Plan, inviting them to adopt one of the dogs or cats. We'll make sure everyone understands that the dogs had been washed and medically examined.
7. We'll take the dogs for a walk near our booth to attract more people. The female dogs will have a pink ribbon and the male ones, sky-blue.

Background knowledge:
We know that dogs are abandoned in the streets of Lima because the cost of keeping a dog can be too expensive. Also that is better to adopt a dog than to buy one and also to sterilize the dog for the dog not to have babies.

How do abandoned animals affect our community? (Paula) Fact fragments
Forced living that conditions die quickly, let diseases
Pollution
Affect our food
More abandon dogs means more dogs left on the streets
Dogs that are forced to live in the streets often die quickly and it may bring diseases where he died. Dogs also pollute our streets by braking garbage bags and letting the trash on the floor. When that happens the trash may end in rivers and oceans and it could affect our sea food. When a person abandon a dog, the dog could get pregnant in any moment and it will reproduce, that means more dogs will be in the streets of Lima-Peru
What can we do so that people can reflect on their action? (Paula) Fact fragments
Start an animal appreciation club
Organize a dog park clean up
Teach our community how to do a difference
Visit a dog shelter
Adopt instead of buy
To make people reflect on their actions we could: start animal appreciation clubs were we could just talk about being nice to dogs. We could also organize a day in the park with all the dogs and have fun with them playing and doing dogs games. We also could teach our community to take care of dogs and make them reflect on what they are doing when leaving a dog behind. We could go to visit dog shelters and learn more about them. Last but not least we could teach people to adopt a dog instead of buying a dog.
What do people do when they see abandoned dogs in the streets? (Francesca)
Get scared
reject
disgust
feel sorry
Few take action.
Most walk away
do nothing.
When people in Lima, see abandoned dogs in the streets, they usually get scared and reject them. Many times people also feel very disgusted because they think street dogs can have contagious diseases. As street dogs search for food in the trash, they also make the streets look dirtier. On the other side, there are also people that feel sorry about these dogs. Some of these people take action and try to help through an organization, such as Grupo Caridad. Nevertheless, most people walk away and do nothing about this. In spite of this, when people are questioned about this topic they say they feel sorry. Though, this feeling is not reflected in their actions.
How have abandoned animals changed the streets of Lima? (Francesca)
Dirty streets- searching food in garbage.
Hygiene problem – mostly markets.
Diseases contagious for humans.
Shelters being created.
Sterilization – vaccination campaigns during weekends, public spaces.
Fight – scare people.
Abandoned animals live in the streets searching food in the garbage, this dirties the streets and makes them look ugly generating a smelly scent. This also creates a hygiene problem, especially in the areas near market places, where meat and chicken are sold all the daylong. Abandoned animals usually have diseases that might be contagious for humans, they can also fight between them and scare people around.Because there are so many of them, special shelters have been created. These spaces did not exist in the past decades. The sterilization and vaccination campaigns are usually made in public places during the weekends, for example in parks. This changes the use of public spaces and can bring more awareness on this topic.

3- Make posters or videos persuading people to go adopt animals from shelters instead of buying dogs or cats from petshops.
4- Donate money to animal shelters, so the rescued animals can have a decent place to live until they become adopted. Also this money can be used to make sterelization campaigns.
5- Advertise animal shelters at school, home, and any other place, because people may want to adopt a pet, but they might not know where to do it.
6- You can also get animals from the streets, take them to the vet and keep them as pets.
7. Convince animal owners to sterilize their pets so they cannot accidentally reproduce.
Those are some easy ways to help abandoned animals.
Why do people abandon animals? (Marcelo)
interviews and Wikipedia
According to Grupo Caridad founder, Fernando Moreno, for every 100 dogs that are purchased or adopted, 30% end up abandoned on the streets.
There is no culture in Peru for training dogs, resulting in dogs with no discipline that become aggressive and destructive.
Female dogs are abandoned by dog merchants when they reach 6 or 7 years old and can no longer reproduce. Also, dog owners who raise dogs to fight abandon them when they no longer can compete against other dogs.
Some times in a large family, one person might like the pet, but others in the family who don't often find ways to get rid of the dog. Some times they send them to a relative's house in the country side or just abandon them in the streets.
Most dogs are abandoned in Cieneguilla or Huachipa (Lima's country side). Grupo Caridad is currently building a dog shelter in Cieneguilla that will give dogs a place to live until they get adopted by a loving family. Grupo Caridad will also train, exercise, and teach the dogs skills so they can become a good pet. Part of the plan is to also teach dogs to be a good companion to future owners by using a staged living room with couches and a TV so they get used to what a real home is like.
Others abandon their dogs because they can't afford a trainer or simply don't want to find a trainer because they think their dog doesn't need to be disciplined. Additionally, many owners don't want to sterilize their dogs because of the cost. When their dog becomes pregnant by a street dog, the owners abandon them because they don't want to accept the responsibility of the puppies.
